Balancing Ed Tech in the Classroom

Is there such a thing as too much technology?

It is safe to say that the most impressively integrated classrooms have one very simple component—balance.   While technology tools can genuinely enhance a student’s learning experience, the human element of teaching is irreplaceable. The most tech savvy teachers maintain that a balanced classroom is crucial.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Use a method that is best suited for the learning objective- Do not use technology just to use it as an add-on.  Effective technology integration occurs when tech tools are used to enhance the curriculum and meet learning objectives.
  • Every lesson does not need a technology component- There are varied teaching methods for a reason.  Depending on the objective, it may be more beneficial to pull a traditional teaching method out of your toolbox rather than using technology.
  • Focus on content- Using technology without establishing a good connection to the content will complicate the lesson.

As we continue to integrate technology into the curriculum, it is our job as educators to continuously delve into when and where technology will best benefit the learner.
